Heavy, Great Vocals, Good but not great...Reviewed by J. Weber, 2008-03-18
Lead singer Mandy Lion has always provided excellent vocals, and
there are some good songs on this album, but it does not stand out
as one of the greats in heavy metal.
I would recommend this album to metal heads and I am still happy to
add it to my collection.

Mediocre at best.Reviewed by Bruce, 2007-06-27
The unimaginative riffs and mediocre production paired with Mandy Lions overrated voice make for an album that is not indicative of the musicians talent. The songs drone together with few stand out sections. After the first few tracks, the album became monotonous to the point I had to take it out of the disk player. WWIII - "When God Turned Away" is best taken in small doses.
WWIII is back, and better than before!Reviewed by Justin Gaines, 2006-07-14
It took more than a decade, but gravel-voiced Mandy Lion and
company finally unleashed a new WWIII album in 2002. Despite the
inevitable lineup changes, I think the band managed to make When
God Turned Away an improvement over their underground classic debut
album. WWIII's traditional heavy metal sound is intact (think Lizzy
Borden meets WASP meets Armored Saint), but the subject matter and
lyrical content has improved greatly.
Unlike the previous reviewer, I don't think the songs on the
self-titled album were sexy. The lyrics were sexual in nature, but
only in a juvenile kind of way. Put it this way, WWIII's songs are
about as sexy as Faster Pussycat's. WWIII took a big step forward
on this album, focusing the songs on war and religion, which made
the subject matter match the heaviness of the music. Including a
cover of Warrior's "Fighting for the Earth" was a nice tip of the
hat to another great, but unrecognized, band.
When God Turned Away is a great comeback by WWIII, and should
please fans of the debut album as well as anyone who is into
straightforward heavy metal.
The Lion Still RoarsReviewed by C. Wolfe, 2004-03-27
When I heard WWWIII were coming out with a new release I could
hardly wait to hear it. I was hooked on the first album back in
1990 as soon as I heard it. It is a shame they never hit it big
then. Songs like "Time for Terror", "Children of the Revolution",
"Call Me Devil", and "Atomic Sex Appeal" were truly inovative and
rocked. However what was so great about them is exactly what is
missing on the new cd. The first cd had a way of combining extreme
heaviness with extreme sexiness that hard rock so often misses and
so does this cd.
However, with that said it is a very good cd. I miss the guitar
sounds of Tracy G but that Mandy Lion voice is still in tact and
will reach out and grab you and pull you right in. It is a very
heavy yet different kind of voice than most hard bands today that
just yell in some disgruntled voice. This guy sings with it and you
will enjoy it. The guitar riffs are very good but nothing really
new or inovative.
It may not be as instantly catchy as the first cd but songs like
"Rise", "Walk With Me", and "Let the Flesh Rule the Mind" are a cut
above any nu metal crap out there and will rock your world. I
strongly recommend the cd.
